The Weeknd & Daft Punk Sued Over “Starboy” Sample

The Weeknd and Daft Punk have been sued by the Somali-American singer/songwriter Yasminah, over The Weeknd’s 2016 single “Starboy.” According to Yasminah, “Starboy” borrows numerous elements from her 2009 song “Hooyo,” which she co-wrote. Yasminah says two of the producers of “Hooyo” previously threatened to sue over the song and opted to settle outside of court, though she did not receive any money from the producers’ settlement. “Starboy” made it to No. 4 on Billboard’s 100 Best R&B Songs of 2016 list and was even certified 6x Platinum in the United States. Yasminah is suing The Weeknd and Daft Punk for at least $5 million.

Beastie Boys’ Mike D and Ad-Rock Caught Off Guard By Eminem’s ‘Kamikaze’ Cover Art

in 2013, Eminem paid homage to The Beastie Boys on his single, “Berzerk.” He paid homage once again with his latest album, Kamikaze and the album art for Kamikaze shares similarities with The Beastie Boys’ cover for their 1986 album, License To Ill. However, Ad-Roc and Mike D from The Beastie Boys’ were surprised by the fact Em paid homage to them. Both Ad-Roc and Mike D said that Eminem gave them no warning about the cover art to Kamikaze which bears similarities to License To Ill. “All of a sudden I get 10 like text messages, 20 text messages. Then I’m like, ‘Why do I all of a sudden have 50 text messages? I better see what’s going on,'” Mike D said. “Everybody’s forwarding me the album cover from, like, the Twitter feed, or whatever. So that’s how they found out.” The boys are gearing up to release their highly anticipated Beastie Boys Book which comes out later this fall.

Frank Ocean Sends Cease-and-Desist To Be Removed From Travis Scott’s ‘Astroworld’

Frank Ocean has reportedly sent a cease-and-desist letter to Travis Scott asking the rapper to drop him from their collaboration song “Carousel.”  The track appears on Scott’s new album, Astroworld, and Ocean wants his vocals removed from the song, because they had been changed without his permission. The feud reportedly began before the number one album was released last month, and Ocean’s lawyers are now using legal means to force Scott to remove their client’s vocals. Ocean and Scott have yet to comment, but reports are claiming that Scott will not grant Ocean’s request.
