The Cicadas Are so Loud, People Are Calling 9-1-1

Trillions of cicadas are set to hatch in the eastern U.S. over the next few weeks, from Georgia to Wisconsin.

It’s a big one this time with two separate 17-year and 13-year broods.  And once again, people online are wondering, can you EAT them?  The answer is YES, they’re edible.  So if you really want to, dig in.

The “AP” also just picked up a story on how the sound itself is already confusing people, prompting 9-1-1 calls.  (???)

A sheriff’s office in Newberry, South Carolina asked people on Facebook this week to stop filing noise complaints.  (Here’s the post.)

They said several people have called to report a siren, or some sort of a weird roaring sound that was really loud.

The sheriff wanted everyone to know it’s just cicadas, and filing a report won’t do any good.  “Unfortunately, it is the sounds of nature.”
