The U.S. has a population of around 342 million people, which seems like TOO MANY if you’re currently trying to find a JOB, or TOO FEW if you’re currently trying to find a DATE.
A poll asked, “Do you think the U.S. would be better off or worse off if it had 100 million MORE people?” Only 8% of people said “better off”, 23% said “about the same”, and 45% said “worse off.” (24% said “not sure.”)
Old folks were more likely to say we’d be worse off.
Then, the people in the poll were asked, “Do you think the U.S. would be better off or worse off if it had 100 million FEWER people?” 25% said “better off”, 29% said “about the same”, and 17% said “worse off.” (28% were not sure.)
Men, especially younger men, were more likely to say we’d be WORSE off with 100 million fewer. (Maybe because that would be 50 million fewer women?)
For what it’s worth, America last had 100 million fewer people in the late-’80s, when the population was around 240 million people. Of course, part of the growth is because older people are living longer.
