Five Random Facts for Wednesday

Here are some random facts for you.

1.  In 1997, 24.6% of 12th graders smoked cigarettes every day.  That’s one out of every four high school seniors.  By 2023, it had dropped to 0.7%, or one out of every 143 seniors.  Vaping has replaced some of that, but not as much as you may think.  In 2023, 5.8% of high school seniors were daily vapers.

2.  Cats sleep so much that by the time they turn nine years old, they’ve only been awake about three years.

3.  There’s a term for elderly men who pass their time watching construction sites or roadwork.  They’re called “umarell.”

4.  ABBA, The Beach Boys, Bob Marley, Diana Ross, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Notorious B.I.G., Oasis, Queen, Snoop Dogg, and The Who have all never won a single Grammy.

5.  Julianne Moore won the Oscar for Best Actress for the movie “Still Alice” in 2015.  It was directed by a guy named Wash West, who got his start by directing gay porn.
