A Grandmother’s Viral “Hot Take”: Grandparents Are Responsible for Butting in to Care for Grandchildren

If you’re a parent, are YOUR parents constantly butting in on everything, trying to dominate everything with their grandchildren?  And if not, are you WISHING THEY WOULD?

A grandmother on TikTok is going viral for her “hot take” that it is a GRANDPARENT’S responsibility to step in and help their kids with parenting duties, and to facilitate relationships with their grandchildren. Not the parents’.

Before you jump into the debate, the grandmother is coming from a POSITIVE place, not a pushy, domineering one.

She’s not suggesting grandparents INTRUDE, she’s just saying they’re the ones who should take the initiative to reach out, and offer to help.

Like, “Can we help with this?  Can we come and visit?  Can we take [the grandchildren] there?  Is there anything you’d like me to do?  Do you need some support this week?  Next week? These are my days off.”

This isn’t the time for grandparents to be prioritizing THEIR TIME.

Who’s responsibility is it? I think it’s firmly the grandparents responsibility. Being a devoted granny is an absolute privilege and one I cherish #mumsoftiktok #grandparentsoftiktok #familymatters #familydynamics #generationaltrauma

(Of course, this isn’t always possible due to geographical differences, health and mobility, and family dynamics.  So you shouldn’t feel shamed if you’re not able to do as much as you’d like.)

(It’s mostly a message to grandparents who would LIKE to be more involved, but may be waiting for someone to invite them, or have been a little too lax about offering support and lending a hand.)
