Here’s a festive topic: It’s peak season for CONSTIPATION.
A lot of the stuff we eat more of around the holidays can leave you feeling backed up. There’s not a lot of fiber in Christmas cookies. And the booze in that eggnog can leave you dehydrated, which doesn’t help.
Luckily, science just figured out the top foods to add to your diet that can lead to less straining in the bathroom.
Researchers at King’s College in London found these three foods are the best ones to eat if you’re backed up. The first one is a classic, but you might not guess the other two . . .
1. Prunes. They’re high in fiber, and also have something called sorbitol. It’s used in certain types of over-the-counter laxatives. Eight to 10 prunes per day can get things moving again.
2. Kiwi. They’ve got a specific enzyme that breaks down proteins and helps with digestion. Two or three a day for one month can help keep you regular.
3. Rye bread. It’s the best option when it comes to bread. Studies have found it can even work better than some laxatives.
COFFEE is another option that can get things moving because it stimulates the muscles in your colon. Just don’t drink too much or it can leave you dehydrated. Two cups a day, max.
