A Bizarre 50-Year-Old Recipe Is Trending: “Pancake Soup”

Don’t hate me for saying this, but FALL is just around the corner.  Don’t hate me for this either:  Which means it’s almost PANCAKE SOUP season.  (???)

A recipe from 1975 is going viral online, a recipe for “Pancake Soup.”

When you hear “pancake soup,” you might think of those TikTok-style “hacks,” where a traditional dish is deconstructed, like maybe pancakes in a “broth” of syrup, milk, fruit, and sugar.  But this was 50 years ago, so it’s not a stunt.

For the recipe, you basically make pancakes on a griddle in bacongrease, and then cut them into quarter-inch strips.  Then you put the strips into an ACTUAL broth, made with bouillon cubes and water.  Heat and serve.

At first this seems gross, but then, it starts to sound interesting.

A post with an image of the recipe has gone viral, and some commenters have pointed out that it’s a German dish called “Flädlesuppe.”  There are a lot of ways to do it, some more appealing than others.  (Like THIS modern-looking version looks a lot better than THIS one.)
