The secret to keeping your home cool this year could be, BABY FOOD FOR ADULTS.
A researcher in the U.K. has found that you can keep your home more than six degrees cooler, by simply covering your windows in YOGURT. Seriously. The yogurt forms a thin film on the window itself, and reflects some of the incoming solar radiation due to its light color, so less heat passes through.
The scientists used a supermarket-brand of Greek yogurt that has a fat percentage of about 10%. We’re assuming it was PLAIN flavored, so you don’t have random chunks of strawberries or peach on your windows.
Naturally, you probably have questions.
It can be applied from the outside, “painted” with a roller.
If you’re worried about the SMELL, don’t be. Supposedly, the yogurt smells for “30 seconds when drying,” but as soon as it dries “the smell disappears.”
They didn’t really say what inspired the idea to use YOGURT of all things, other than that they were looking for “low-cost ways” to keep things cool. (Most people probably wouldn’t consider yogurt “cheap.” But supposedly, you only need about a tablespoon per window.)
They claim it isn’t messy. In fact, you can keep it on for a while, as long as there isn’t a heavy rain. And that it’s “simple” to wash off with a cloth and water. They also say it hasn’t been known to attract insects and other pests.
If you’re looking for a SLIGHTLY less eccentric option: They did also find that blocking your windows with tinfoil can keep the heat out. And it’s almost twice as effective as the yogurt hack.
(Someone online tried it, by roughly “painting” their office window with yogurt from the inside. They say they DID notice a difference during a heat-wave, and the yogurt did not attract flies. They also said it “doesn’t even look that bad, it just looks like white paint.”) (???)
