If any of these are your go-to food for grilling, maybe put someone else in charge of the barbecue. There’s a list trending of “10 foods you should never grill.” Here are the top foods to skip when prepping for your next barbecue . . .
1. Soft cheeses. They melt immediately. So don’t top stuff with Brie or mozzarella while it’s still on the grill. And obviously don’t put it ON the grill either.
2. Delicate fish fillets. Don’t put them directly on the grill, or they’ll stick and tear. If you want to grill them, wrap them in foil first.
3. Leafy greens. If you’re trying to grill spinach, you’re doing something wrong.
4. Raw eggs in the shell. (???) They’ll explode and get everywhere.
5. Bacon. It’ll drip, tear, and not cook evenly, so you’re better off using the oven. If you want to give it a smokey taste, put it on foil after it’s cooked, and leave it on the grill for 30 seconds. But not directly over the flames.
6. Soft tofu. Extra-firm tofu is your best option for grilling. Softer types fall apart too easily.
7. Frozen shrimp. Thaw it overnight in the fridge first. Otherwise, you’ll end up with scorched outsides and frozen middles.
8. Extra-lean burgers. They dry out too quickly on the grill. You’re better off with cheaper meat that’s 20% fat.
9. Thick root vegetables. Things like beets and big carrots need time to soften up. They won’t cook through the whole way if you just toss them on a hot grill.
10. Watermelon. TikTok disagrees with that one, and grilled watermelon was a big trend last year. It just tends to fall apart and make a mess. So if you do want to try it, use thick slices and leave the rind attached.
