Men Are More Likely to Buy a New Phone, Just Because

40 years ago, no one would believe this:  People in 2025 will spend $1,000-plus on a telephone every other year or so.

A poll asked people WHY they buy a new phone, and here are the results:

25% said they just want a newer model.

24% said it’s because their current phone breaks.

24% said it’s because their current phone becomes too slow.

12% said it’s because they’re eligible for an upgrade, or will start a new plan

8% said they’re “not sure.”  (Which is telling.  How many things do you spend $1,000 on, without a memorable reason?)

7% said “some other reason.”  (There’s no word what those might be.)

Men are more likely to buy a new phone just because they want a new model.  For women, it’s usually because their current phone breaks or becomes too slow.

Younger people are also more likely to just want a newer model

People were also asked how long they expect to own their current phone.  The most common responses were “1 to 2 years” (23%) and “2 to 3 years” (21%).

12% said “3 to 4 years”, and 9% said “4 to 5 years.”  (It’s not exciting, but these are the timeframes you should probably be shooting for.)

12% said “less than one year”, and 10% said “more than five years.”  (That would be awesome if you could do it, but most phones aren’t built to last that long.  At some point, the tech on older phones isn’t even supported anymore.)
